At last it is here, the 2016 DTM season is officially under way and it's been a great start for Audi and Nico Mueller. Audi RS5 DTMs locked out the top six positions in what was a total domination of the time sheets but Mueller, who set the fastest time, is still wary of what BMW and Mercedes are capable of in qualifying later today.
The Swiss set the fastest time of the session, a 1:33.861, he was followed by five Audi teammates, Rockenfeller, Ekstrom, Scheider, Green and Mortara. However it wasn't a complete Audi whitewash, Adrien Tambay and Miguel Molina both ended the session outside of the top ten but given the incredibly close nature of the session this was hardly surprising.
The new Mercedes was the closest challenger that Audi faced, Robert Wickens and Gary Paffett both made it into the top ten with a seventh and eighth place finish respectively. Both the Canadian and the Brit were within a tenth of a second of each other and Mercedes should be reasonably pleased with the results from their new car as this gives them a solid foundation for the rest of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Bruno Spengler, who ended the session ninth and Austrian Lucas Auer, who ended the session tenth. Again, these two were within one tenth of each other with a 1:34.238 for Spengler and a 1:34.329 for Auer meaning that both of them were less that half a second of the fastest time for Mueller.
The 2016 DTM season is already looking to be an incredibly close affair and qualifying later today will be very interesting indeed, you are not going to want to miss it.
