The third round of the 2016 NASCAR Spint cup series was an absolute thriller from start to finish.
For the second time this season it was the Stewart-Haas racing Chevrolet of hometown hero Kurt Busch who started on pole and he would go on to lead the first thirty two laps of the race before eventually being overtaken. On lap fourty four the Team Penske Ford of Joey Logano was able to force it's way into the race lead and he would remain fighting at the front for much of the race.
The first major incident of the day happened with seventy laps to go when AJ Allmendinger tapped the back of Kyle Larson, forcing the Chip Ganassi Chevrolet into the wall and bringing out the caution. Worse was to follor for Larson though as with fifty three laps to go he was once again involved in a wreck. Regan Snith lost the back of his car and Larson spun while trying to avoid him and ended up smacking the right rear of his car into the inside wall.
With fourty three lpas to go there was yet another caution this time for a bigger wreck involving several cars. Matt Kenseth started to slide heading down into turn one and he was hit by Chase Elliott, the incident also caused damage to Carl Edwards in the Joe Gibbs Toyota, and to polesitter Kurt Busch. Elliott said of the inciedent that it was “Bad job on my end I should know better than to miss a wreck like that.”
After a fantastic restart, Kyle Busch took the lead on lap two hundred and twenty four and it looked like the Toyota would remain there but with just six laps remaining on lap two hundred and sixty one, the Penske Ford of Brad Keselowski pounced and managed to force it's way past the Toyota. Keselowski's teammate Joey Logano and the Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson would also find their way past the struggling Busch.
This is Keselowskis first win since California last year and it has lcoked the former champion ino the chase along with Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson. It also means that in the first race three races this season each of the three manufacturers has won a race which is a good sign of things to come. Ryan Blaney was the winning rookie driver and he is now thirty two points ahead of Chase Elliott in the points standings.
There were a number of penalties handed out in the race for pit lane speeding. Kurt Busch was sent to the rear of the field when he sped in the pitlane under the competition caution. Also penalised were Austin Dillon, Greg Biffle, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Kyle Larson, AJ Allmendinger and eventual winner Brad Keselowski.
The next race is the Good Sam 500 at the Phoenix International Raceway on the thirteenth of March and it's set to be another thriller.
